Spine: Dark Leather with five panels, four decorated and one for title. Name of Emma Smith embossed in gold lettering at bottom edge. Spine Lettering and Label: Title in second from top panel on spine. Gold block lettering visible. Cover: Dark Leather with gold decoration. Embossed lined perimeter. Two faint scratch marks at bottom edge near lower right corner. Binding: Signs of wear at spine/cover hinging. Cream color inside pastedown and front end paper. Additional front end paper. Bookplate sticker on inside front cover pastedown listing Charles Francis Adams. “BA:B12” written in pencil on top left edge of bookplate. Title Page: Present and intact. “ADAM 8763” written on bottom edge. Text: Full text block, no recorded markings. Inscription: Front end paper: “Joseph Smith” in pencil. “15 May 1844 at Nauvoo” in pencil (CF Adams’ handwriting) , “The above is the autograph of the Chief of the Mormons who gave me this book at Nauvoo in Illinois on the 15th of May 1844. C.F Adams” in ink.
